Privacy Policy
Last updated October 27, 2026 · Moth for iPhone and mothflame.app
- Without an account, everything stays on your iPhone. Your Screen Time data is never sent to us.
- Apple Health data (steps, distance, exercise minutes, workouts, sleep, Activity rings) is read on the device; the samples themselves are never uploaded. A fitness challenge is checked on the iPhone too — only that you finished it, and on which day, reaches your account. What is kept is derived from them: a Health goal's monthly total (for example, 187,420 steps), which syncs to your account when you are signed in so you can follow the goal over time; the Focus Score's Movement and Sleep scores out of 100, which sync with the rest of your daily Focus Score (the sleep and step figures behind them only if you turn on sharing them, and then your friends see them too); and any bonus scroll time, which stays on the iPhone.
- Friends is optional. If you make a profile, people can find you by its name and @username and ask to be friends; a friend sees your latest Focus Score and its parts, your streak and your badges — never your apps, minutes or money, and your sleep and movement figures only if you choose to share them.
- If you sign in with Apple, your buckets, goals, streak, allowances, settings and daily Focus Score sync to your account, along with your history — every app's daily totals on iPhones in the EU, where Apple shares usage with apps, and the picked apps' daily minutes elsewhere — so it outlives Apple's month-long window.
- No ads, no tracking, no selling or sharing of your data. Delete everything from inside the app, or by email.

Moth shows you what your screen time is costing you. This policy explains exactly what the app collects, why, and what control you have. It is written by the people who built the app, and it describes the app as it ships today.
What we collect
If you do not sign in, the app works entirely on your device. Your Screen Time data, your Health data, your buckets, goals and settings all stay on your iPhone and are never sent to us. There is no account to create to use the app.
If you sign in with Apple, we store the following in your account:
- An account identifier from Apple. Apple gives us an anonymous identifier for you. If you choose to hide your email, we only ever see Apple's private relay address — never your real one.
- Daily app usage. For each day: the app's bundle identifier
(for example
com.example.social), its display name, time spent, times opened, and notifications received. These are daily totals — never what you did inside an app, and never hour-by-hour detail. - Your buckets. Which apps you placed in Positive, Negative or Neutral, and which apps you linked to a goal.
- Your goals. Each goal's name, unit, monthly target or per-day target, how far along it is this month, and — for a Health goal — which Health measure it tracks (steps, walking/running distance or exercise minutes). Only the goal's running total is stored, not the underlying Health samples.
- Your streak. The count of consecutive days you finished under your scroll time, and your longest run.
- Your Focus Score, day by day. Each day's score, how many of the last 14 days were measured, and each part's score out of 100 with the short line under it — so a reinstall or a new phone shows the scores you had. Movement, Sleep and Morning send their score alone unless you choose otherwise: the figures under them come from Apple Health (steps and the Move ring, hours asleep, minutes after the time Health says you woke) and stay on the iPhone until you turn on Share sleep details or Share movement and fitness details (see Apple Health).
- Your settings. Your hourly rate, daily scroll time, reminder interval, and the "Earn Scroll Time" rule (the movement goal, the measure it uses, and the bonus minutes it grants).
- A device record. An identifier we generate for your installation, plus the device type, so usage from multiple devices stays separate.
- Your badges and challenges. Which badges you have earned and when, which challenges you completed and on which day, and when you tapped Start on a fitness challenge, so they come back on a new phone. Never the steps, minutes or hours behind them.
- Notifications. If you allow notifications, Apple gives your iPhone an address for alerts (a push token). We store it with the phone's time zone and language, so an alert — a friend request, a new challenge — arrives at a sensible hour and in your language. We also keep the alerts we sent you, so the list behind the bell shows them again. Signing out or turning notifications off stops them; deleting your account removes the token and the list.
- When you use it, and which version. The days your account reached our server, from the app or this website, and the app's build number. We look at these only in totals — how many accounts are active each day and week, and which versions are in use — to keep the service running and to improve it. It is our own record on our own server; nothing is shared and the app contains no analytics SDKs.
Friends
Friends, on the Challenges tab, is optional and needs an account. Nothing about you is shown to anyone until you make a profile there.
- Your profile. The name, @username and icon (an emoji on a colour) you choose. Anyone signed in with a profile can find you by them and ask to be friends; nobody becomes your friend until you accept.
- What a friend sees. Your latest Focus Score and each part's score, the last two weeks of totals, your streak, and your badges and challenge badges. Never your apps, your minutes, your money, or the lines under each part. If you turn on Share sleep details or Share movement and fitness details, a friend also sees those figures under the part (see Apple Health).
- Finding friends in your contacts. Only if you tap it and allow Contacts. Your iPhone turns each contact's email address into a one-way digest (SHA-256) and sends only those; we compare them with the email Apple gave us for people who allow it (a switch on their profile, never a private-relay address) and keep none of what was sent. Phone numbers are not used.
- Blocking and reports. Blocking someone ends any friendship and hides you from each other. A report keeps who reported whom and why, so we can remove a profile with an objectionable name.
- Leaving Friends (or deleting your account) removes your profile and every friendship.
Apple Health
These optional features read from Apple Health, and only once you allow it: Health goals (walk a number of steps, cover a distance, or log exercise minutes over the month), Earn Scroll Time (a step goal or closing your Apple Watch Move ring adds bonus scroll time for that day), the Focus Score's Movement and Sleep parts (and the bed and wake times Morning and Quiet Hours go by), and fitness challenges (steps, exercise minutes, workouts or hours of sleep, counted from the moment you tap Start).
- The app reads steps, walking and running distance, exercise minutes, workouts, sleep and Activity ring progress. It reads only; it never writes to Health.
- Health data is read on your iPhone and is never uploaded. The raw samples never leave the device.
- What the app keeps is derived: a goal's monthly total in its own units (for example, 187,420 steps) and the bonus minutes you earned today. If you are signed in, the goal's monthly total syncs to your account with your other goals, so the Account page and your other devices show the same progress and you can follow a goal over time. Bonus minutes stay on the device. We use this total for nothing but showing you your goal — never for advertising, and it is never shared or sold.
- The Focus Score is worked out on the iPhone. Movement and Sleep score your steps, Move ring and hours asleep; Morning and Quiet Hours use the times Health says you went to bed and woke. If you are signed in, the day's Focus Score syncs to your account with each part's score out of 100. The Health figures behind them stay on the iPhone unless you choose to share them.
- Sharing your sleep and movement figures is your choice, and off until you turn it on. Two switches, in Settings → Goals & Health and in your Friends profile: Share sleep details (your average hours asleep, how many nights were seven to nine hours, and how soon after waking you first opened a Negative app) and Share movement and fitness details (your average daily steps, and how many days your step goal was met or your Move ring closed). With a switch on, those figures, worked out over the last 14 days, sync to your account with each day's Focus Score and your friends see them under that part. Never the raw Health samples, your exact bed or wake times, or anything Health holds beyond them. Turn a switch off and those figures are removed from your account, and your friends stop seeing them. We never use them for advertising, and never share or sell them.
- You can revoke access at any time in the Health app under Sharing → Apps, and the app keeps working without it.
Screen Time and blocking
The app uses Apple's Screen Time frameworks (Family Controls, Device Activity and Managed Settings) to read how long apps were used and, only for the apps you choose, to show a pause screen or a block once you are past your scroll time. This works on your own device and your own data; there is no way to see or manage another person's device. Apple provides usage as totals — the app never sees the contents of your apps, messages or browsing.
App Intentions (per-app open limits) and the In-Flight Pass are enforced entirely on the device; nothing about them is sent to us.
Your account and why it exists
Apple keeps roughly a month of Screen Time history on your device. Storing your daily totals in your account (every app's on iPhones in the EU, where Apple shares usage with apps; the picked apps' minutes elsewhere) is what lets you see months or years of history later, and it lets the History page on this website show the same figures the app shows. Your buckets, goals, streak and settings are stored so they follow you if you reinstall the app or get a new phone, and so the Account page can show and change them.
Signing out simply stops syncing; it does not delete anything.
Payments and sign-in
- In the app, Moth Pro is an Apple in-app purchase. Apple handles payment; we never see or store your payment details. To confirm the purchase, the app sends us Apple's signed transaction, which we verify and record as your subscription status and renewal date.
- On this website, Pro can be bought through Stripe. Stripe holds your card details under its own privacy policy; we store a Stripe customer identifier, the subscription's status and its renewal date, and nothing about the card.
- Sign in with Apple is the only way to sign in, on the phone and on the web. We keep the anonymous identifier and relay email Apple issues.
Demo Mode
Demo Mode fills the app with sample data so every feature can be seen without waiting for real Screen Time to accrue. The samples are fictional, are generated on the device, and are never uploaded. Turning it off returns you to your own data.
What we never do
- We never sell or rent your data.
- We never share it with advertisers or data brokers.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and the app contains no analytics or advertising SDKs.
- We do not use your data to build advertising profiles.
- We do not read the contents of your apps, your messages, or your browsing — only how long apps were used, which is what Apple's Screen Time provides.
- We do not upload Apple Health samples, and the figures worked out from them leave your iPhone only as described above.
How it is protected
- All traffic between the app, this website and our servers uses HTTPS.
- Data is encrypted at rest by our database provider.
- Every request is checked server-side so your data is only ever returned to your own authenticated account.
- Our logs record which requests happened, never the usage data itself.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app: Settings → Account → Delete Account. This permanently removes your usage history, coverage records, buckets, goals, streak, Focus Score, settings, subscription record and device records, and cancels any web subscription. It cannot be undone, and we keep no shadow copy.
You can also email support@mothflame.app and we will delete your account for you.
Data retention
We keep your synced history until you delete it, because its usefulness is the long-term record. Deleting your account removes it immediately.
Children
Moth is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Third parties
We use Apple (Sign in with Apple, Screen Time, Health and in-app purchase), Stripe (web payments only), and a hosting and database provider to run our service. They process data on our behalf under their own security obligations. We share your data with no one else.
To show an app's icon and name, the app asks Apple's public App Store lookup service for the ones that go with an app's bundle identifier. Only the identifier and your iPhone's two-letter country or region code (for example, DE) are sent, so apps sold only in your country's store are found — no account, device or usage information — and the icons are cached on the phone.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will update the date above and note the change in the app.
